Description

Printed_Web_3.pdf is the third publication in Paul Soulellis’ series Printed Web, published under the umbrella of his Library of the Printed Web after starting to collect web-to-print publications in 2013. This third issue stands out from the six publications of the series as the most extensive one. It results from an open call and includes works by 147 artists, which are also published as a ZIP file and archived as a browsable directory by Rhizome.

The print-on-demand book Printed_Web_3.pdf gives a spread to each artist, with the file names on the left-hand page and the pictures, stills, or collages of their submitted works on the right-hand page. It also includes an index of files received, an interview with media philosopher Alexander Galloway, and Silvio Lorusso’s essay “In Defense of Poor Media” that reflects on the post-digital specifics of print-on-demand, drawing on Hito Steyerl’s essay “In Defense of Poor Image.”

In this spirit, Printed_Web_3.pdf also seeks to explore questions of format and media caused by web-to-print. The hybridity is already evident in the title of the printed book, which refers to the digital version of the book as a file name. In addition to this print-on-demand publication, which combines PDF and printed book, and the ZIP file containing all the artists’ contributions, this edition includes a set of ten zines (21.6 × 27.9 cm, 24 pages each) and a hand-bound Chinatown edition with modified print-on-demand pages (15.2 × 22.9 cm, 538 pages), wrapped in a thick neoprene PDF cover and limited to ten copies.
