This publication contains the complete catalog of the Library of the Printed Web as acquired by The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) Library: 244 items by 130 artists publishing in seventeen countries, compassing artists’ books, zines, newsprint, loose sheets, folios, prints, postcards, and other materials. Most are self-published, including handmade, one-of-a-kind, and limited editions, as well as print-on-demand works. Many of the works are rare or no longer available. The comprehensive catalog presents all of them with photographs and detailed descriptions. It also includes texts by David Senior and Sarah Hamerman of MoMA Library, artist Sal Randolph, and Paul Soulellis.
Paul Soulellis started his Library of the Printed Web in 2013 and ended it with the handover of the collection to MoMA in 2017. Its mission was “to investigate web-to-print artistic practice and the increasingly fluid relationship between screen and printed page,” as well as “to provide an in-depth view of network culture, artistic practice, and the printed page. The collection is an important resource for the study of print-based experimental publishing in the early 21st century” (Paul Soulellis, “About”).
In 2014, Soulellis began publishing artists’ publications under the umbrella of the Library of the Printed Web, which are also included in his collection. Besides Printed Web Editions there is the series Printed Web 1–5, which circulates primarily as print-on-demand publications, but also includes PDFs, ZIPs, GIFs, and server directories. In the spirit of Seth Siegelaub, each issue is curated as a group exhibition for the printed page.
The collection can be viewed by the general public on site at the MoMA Library, but is also available for institutional loan. It is listed with its own call number designation “LPW” in MoMA Library’s catalog.
