Sorority Skin Tones
a PANTONE® color guide
Description

Travis Shaffer’s Sorority Skin Tones is a collection of the twenty most common skin tones web-sampled from Facebook photographs of the ten largest American sororities on November 15, 2010. Each tone is averaged and matched to the closest PANTONE® color. The series begins on the cover, whose skin tone is specified as PANTONE® 2365 C, and can also be understood as an empirical representation of the Whiteness of sorority culture.

Similar to Shaffer’s Social Media Blues, the book contrasts the analog color swatch for CMYK printing with the sampling of digital colors represented in screen-based RGB. As such, Sorority Skin Tones is a reflection on the remediation of color from skin to digital photo to screen display to printing. Accordingly, the statement at the end of the book reads, “The Artist also makes no warranties regarding the accuracy of the illustrated Pantone swatches and does not recom- mend this guide as a tool for color management.”
